An excellent interview – just the first few minutes alone gave me a different view of Markus Allard. I’d actually never heard of ‘the transferiat’ (DEI employees that do stuff no one needs but has to pay for), even though I talk about politics (mostly international, mind you) every day. There’s a similar concept relating to capital: ‘rent-seeking’, i.e. capital that seeks returns in ways that are harmful to the rest of society. Instead of building factories or developing helpful technology, they spread lies, bribe, sell addictive substances and drugs, corrupt education and academia, and start wars.

Markus first offers some good advice on how to deal with the mainstream media, which is only out to get disruptive individuals. They try to inflate their victim’s ego in the hope of producing an in-depth report that will turn out to be a smear piece in which everything is taken out of context.

Allard was a member of the Left Party who was expelled for being too radical. He then began working for Nyheteridag and was branded a fascist by his former party colleagues. He uses Marxist analysis to identify which classes are affected by measures such as mass immigration, which causes both anti-communists and the modern radical left to hate him. He also acknowledges that the class of overpaid virtue signallers, as well as underpaid or benefit-dependent freeloaders, will be hit hard by his policies (strong similarities with the NSDAP), and that billionaires will also benefit from wiping out the entire Transferiat.

### INTRODUCTION

The Jews and their conditions of life have from ancient times formed a remarkable question in cultural history, one that has also, in the course of the centuries, called forth an entire literature. They have thereby been the object of the most varied judgements, according to the manner in which the peoples of Europe at different periods regarded these foreign guests. Side by side with the historical accounts of the fortunes of the Israelites and of their old-time culture, one finds a multitude of polemical writings that treat of their relation to the Christian population.

Interest in the doings of the Jews has during the last decade increased ever more — chiefly on account of the after-effects of the World War — and our own country has not remained untouched by the discussion which the international Jewish question has awakened. It is also in connection herewith that we present the following account of the immigration and settlement of the Jews in Sweden.

It should, however, be observed that this work in no way occupies itself with the so-called Jewish question or with the general Semitic problem, but aims solely at giving a cultural-historical survey of the fortunes of the Jews in Sweden from earlier times down to our own day, together with a glimpse into their private conditions of life and religious customs. For this purpose particular weight has been laid upon the illustrative material.

### I. THE FIRST JEWS IN SWEDEN

It is extremely difficult to say when the first Jews arrived in Sweden. The countrymen of Ahasuerus have assuredly in earlier times occasionally visited our land during their centuries-long wanderings, although these visits, out of regard to the wickedness of the age, took place incognito. It has been particularly assumed that isolated Jews appeared in protective disguise among the many foreign merchants who in olden times visited Sweden — and preferably among the Hanseatic traders or among travellers from the Baltic provinces. These scattered Jewish sojourners have, however, left no traces in our older source-writings regarding their doings, whereas the Gypsies, who appeared in larger bands, are mentioned in Olaus Petri’s chronicle: “The same year (1512) when Lord Sten had become Captain, there came a party of that people who wander from one country to another, whom one calls Tatars, hither into the land and to Stockholm; previously they had never been here.”

According to a conjecture advanced, among others, by Strindberg in one of his dramas, the first Jew in Sweden is said to have been Herman Israels, a merchant who entered the country during the critical time when Gustav Vasa was preparing the independence of his realm. This Israels rendered our country great services on that occasion — mostly of a pecuniary nature — and he also won great esteem among the lords of the realm.

After Gustav Vasa’s entry into Stockholm and when the king had ordered the affairs of the kingdom, it became one of his first measures to reward the foreign merchant. This was done in such wise that Israels received the right to carry on trade in all Swedish towns. On the day of Philip and James in the year 1524 there was issued a “Letter of Authority concerning Trading in all Market-Towns in Sweden,” valid for the said Israels and his wife, permitting them without any taxes or the like whatsoever to pursue their trade in the towns, whether with foreign merchants or with the settled burghers. Having regard to the strongly restricted rights within economic life at that period, the privileges the Jew obtained were of great value.

After this isolated case of Jewish immigration a long time still elapsed before the Mosaic believers began more generally to find their way to Sweden. Old parish legends do indeed tell in many places of Jews who sojourned in different parts of the country in earlier times, but only after the beginning of the seventeenth century do we find the oldest reliable notices of Jews in Sweden.

During the time of Gustav II Adolf, when our country entered into livelier connections with the European Continent, a good many Jews are likely to have visited Sweden on various errands, although they perhaps still concealed their true nationality. Especially at the foundation of Gothenburg, when so many Dutch merchants were called in, some wealthy Jews are said to have moved over to the new commercial city under the leadership of Abraham Cabeliau. This remarkable man is also said to have been of Jewish descent — on account of the peculiarities of the name and certain traits in his private manner of life. These few Jews belonged, however, in general to a class of more well-situated Israelitish merchants who in Holland occupied an esteemed position and who had nothing in common with the wandering Jews who during the seventeenth century ever more frequently visited Sweden, where they were for the most part received with great suspicion both by the population and by the authorities.

**Queen Christina and the Jews**

The restless and far-ranging Queen Christina, whose lively mind constantly drove her to seek new friends among the great men of Europe in all fields of culture, did not neglect the Jews either. The Queen’s interest in science and literature led her also to call to Sweden such distinguished men as Descartes and Salmasius, while at the same time she corresponded with the renowned rabbi Menasseh Ben Israel in Amsterdam — one of the notable men of the Jewish people in the spiritual sphere. After her abdication, however, the Queen came into contact with another celebrated Israelite who for economic reasons soon intervened in a significant way in Christina’s fate. This man was the rich banker and Portuguese Jew Don Manuel Teixeira in Hamburg, who before long appeared as the Queen’s financier and treasurer under the official title of “royal resident.” Teixeira is also said to have been the foremost of the Jewish merchants in Hamburg in his day, and it is even related that the guard in the market-place presented arms when Teixeira drove past in his magnificent coach.

In the year 1661, when Queen Christina made her second journey abroad, she is said to have entered into the first relations with this banker during the long stay in Hamburg. An agreement was also concluded whereby Teixeira bound himself to pay the Queen 8,000 riksdaler every month and, according to advice and opportunity, to amortise her debts in Holland. In return the Jew received the right to collect all the revenues the Queen received from all her maintenance lands. The Queen, who was often in great need of money during her extensive travels, valued Teixeira’s friendship highly and also lived in his house during her sojourn in Hamburg — although the magistracy of the Hanseatic city had prepared a princely lodging for the high guest. Teixeira’s great reputation caused many princes to accept invitations to his table while Christina stayed in his house, and when the Jew on one occasion came into conflict with the magistracy, Christina took his part and wrote to the Emperor concerning his dealings with the authorities.

**A Jewish Ambassador**

While Queen Christina employed a Jew as banker, the regency of Charles XI found it suitable on one occasion to make use of an Israelite as diplomatic envoy. In the year 1667 His Royal Majesty fitted out an armed naval expedition to the Mediterranean in order there with force to present certain political wishes to the dark rulers of the so-called Barbary States (Morocco, Algiers, Tunis and Tripoli). The object of the expedition was to conclude an agreement with the said realms so that Swedish shipping should no longer be exposed to the piracies which the inhabitants of the Barbary States had from of old practised on the Mediterranean and in adjoining waters.

As diplomatic leader of this expedition was chosen the Portuguese Jew Henrik Azzeveda, who brought with him the best recommendations from Holland. There also accompanied the renowned diplomat Nils (Eosander) Liljenroth. According to the instructions issued for Azzeveda he was to seek to conclude commercial treaties in the said pirate countries and to obtain that Swedes should not be taken captive and sold by the pirates as slaves. Those Swedes who were already in captivity were to be ransomed for a sum not exceeding 300 specie piastres per man.

The Queen Dowager and the Council gave Azzeveda letters of credit and further promised him 20,000 riksdaler specie if he succeeded in his mission. In more important matters he was to consult the experienced Liljenroth, but otherwise he possessed great freedom and was permitted, among other things, to sell for his own profit a cargo of Swedish goods — including cannon, balls and powder — which was carried on the ship.

No real political result was, however, obtained by the expedition, yet the event is noteworthy as the first occasion on which a Jew received an official Swedish commission of trust and entered into larger commercial agreements within Sweden.

**Fear of the Jews**

After the Peace of Westphalia, when Sweden’s territory was considerably enlarged, it was not long before Jews in scattered groups entered the country. In the new Swedish provinces around the Baltic there were numerous Jews, and when communications with the neighbouring lands became livelier, opportunity was also given for a good deal of loose folk to immigrate into Sweden — among them a number of Jews.

During the seventeenth century the Israelitish immigration had reached such an extent that it began to cause concern among the authorities, and means were sought to stop this traffic. It was predominantly for religious reasons that the authorities disapproved of the immigration of the Jews, and since at that period every effort was made to preserve the privileged position of the State Church, attention was directed primarily to the foreign creed of the Israelites. Sweden’s participation in the Thirty Years’ War was, as is well known, dictated at first by regard for the preservation of the Lutheran doctrine in Germany, and the hatred directed against Catholicism branched out also against other church communities — among them the Mosaic. Even Axel Oxenstierna warned against the immigration of the Israelites when there was talk of permitting certain esteemed Dutch Jewish merchants to settle in the newly founded Gothenburg. The Chancellor of the Realm acknowledged that certain economic advantages might be gained by the arrival of these wealthy strangers, but he nevertheless declined the matter on religious grounds and with regard to the view that was then generally current in Europe. This rejecting attitude is particularly remarkable in view of the liberality with which foreigners were otherwise at that period allowed to immigrate into our country and to build castles, cultivate the soil, carry on trade, mining, industry and shipping, etc.

As a further example of the caution observed with regard to the Jews during this period it may be mentioned that Jewish merchants who arrived at Swedish harbours, and preferably at our Baltic provinces, were only allowed to remain for fourteen days in order to sell their goods. If contrary winds occurred so that their departure was hindered, they were nevertheless not permitted to continue trading during the waiting time in the harbour.

One went even so far in aversion to the Jews that if several ships after a storm entered a Swedish harbour to undergo repair at some shipyard, the ship on which any Jew was found was to be taken in hand first, so that the said Jew might as soon as possible be sent out to sea again. If a travelling Jewish merchant fell ill during his stay in Sweden, he was to be given care by the proper authorities so that he might as quickly as possible continue his journey.

**Charles XI and the Jews**

In the hope of greater consideration from the authorities the Jews during the time of Charles XI made a respectful petition (in the year 1680) to be allowed to settle in Stockholm, but the consistory there advised against the plan. Since it was predominantly for ecclesiastical reasons that they were denied admittance, the Jews found it expedient formally to go over to the Evangelical faith; and a large number of them also allowed themselves to be baptised. Jewish baptisms were, moreover, a method by which the authorities in several of the countries of Europe already during the Middle Ages had sought to legalise the citizenship of the Israelites, although these measures often stood in connection with the persecutions to which the Jews were exposed for centuries afterwards.

In the older church books of Stockholm there are a good many notes of such Jewish baptisms, and above all one notices the great ceremony that took place in the German Church in the year 1681, when two large Jewish families, Israel Mendel and Moses Jacob, allowed themselves to be baptised.

At the baptismal ceremony the Jews were escorted by the following representatives of the higher clergy: Bishop Carl Carlsson of Västerås, Bishop Petrus Bång of Viborg, Superintendent Erland Broman of Karlstad, Superintendent Joh. Gezelius of Narva, Pastor Primarius Mathias Iser of Stockholm, Theological Professor Samuel Schunck of Uppsala, Professor Mathias Steuchius of Uppsala, Rector Joh. Vultejus of the Riddarholm Church, Rector Eric Tilasius of the Katarina parish, Rector Aegidius Strauch of the German congregation, Rector Daniel Unger of Munktorp, and the consistorial notary Joh. Sigtunius of Stockholm. At the baptism the Jews received new names that sounded more Christian and Swedish, whereby Israel Mendel was called Carl Christian Mandel and his wife received the name Ulrica Eleonora; Moses Jacob was renamed Gustaf Michael Renatus (= reborn) and his wife received the name Hedvig Eleonora. The children’s names were likewise Swedishised in a similar manner.

This ceremony formed so great and remarkable an event in the capital that even Charles XI with his consort, the Queen Dowager and a number of distinguished personages appeared in the church to witness the conversion of the strangers. It was also for that time something unusual to see grown people brought to baptism, and the continued Jewish baptisms attracted many people to the churches. Charles XI relates, moreover, in his diary how on several occasions he attended such baptismal solemnities, at which the royal family as “sponsors” witnessed the act of baptism of the Jews.

The official baptisms saved some Jews from the power of the authorities and procured them certain civil liberties, but those who did not submit to this conversion were before long exposed to the reminders of the guardians of the law. The increasing immigration of Jews induced Charles XI in the year 1685 to issue a letter to the Council of the Realm and to the then Governor of Stockholm, Baron Christoffer Gyllenstierna, concerning the Israelites present in the capital. This, our oldest ordinance regarding the Jews, runs as follows:

“Charles etc. Our favour etc. Whereas the Consistory here in Stockholm has in all humility informed Us that some Jews are sojourning here in the City, and not only that they presume here to practise their Jewish Religion, but that still more are expected hither with wives and children, for the purpose of settling here, from which offence may easily follow and it is to be feared that one and another abuse in Our true Evangelical Religion might creep in therefrom; And We have taken such into consideration, and for the Royal zeal We always bear for Our pure unspotted doctrine, and in order that every opportunity may be prevented whereby it might come into any danger, have found it good that no Jews, as blasphemers of the Name of Christ and of the Congregation, may be permitted here in the City or elsewhere in Our provinces to sojourn; Therefore is hereby to You Our gracious Will and command that You at once cause the Jews found here in the City to be notified that they, within the space of 14 days, depart hence out of the City and the country and, under the highest penalty, do not presume after the appointed term to remain here. Wherewith You fulfil Your duty.

In consequence of this royal command a real hue and cry after Jews was arranged in Stockholm, but a good many of the strangers appear nevertheless to have saved themselves from the threatening expulsion, for only a week after the short term had expired a new letter from the King to the Governor was at hand, of the following content:

“Charles etc. Our etc. Whereas We have learned that some Jews are still sojourning here in the City, to whom We will grant no longer residence; Therefore is hereby to You Our gracious will and command that You cause such Jews to be notified that they without delay pack themselves out of the country. Wherewith etc.
Carolus.”

The view regarding the Jews that appears in these two royal letters continued thereafter to prevail in Sweden for nearly a century.
