Internet Archive lost an important case on appeal today (September 4, 2024). This case, known as 𝐇𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞 𝐯. 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐭 𝐀𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐯𝐞, was brought by four major publishers:
-𝐇𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞 𝐁𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐩– Owned by the Lagardère Group, a French media company.
-𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐬 𝐏𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐬 – Owned by News Corp, an American media conglomerate founded by Rupert Murdoch.
-𝐉𝐨𝐡𝐧 𝐖𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐲 & 𝐒𝐨𝐧𝐬 – A publicly traded company on the New York Stock Exchange.
-𝐏𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐢𝐧 𝐑𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐦 𝐇𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞 – Owned by Bertelsmann, a German media conglomerate.

Only being allowed to borrow one book at the time sounds less bad than “erasing 500 000 books”, but not good for humanity to get stripped of access to books out of print.
