The important thing with Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imaging combined with a novel Doppler tomography technique is that it can be used on public data that is already available

So if you want to look at stuff underground that isn’t new, everyone with skills and time can look everywhere.

The military implications of this are HUGE!

So how does one “see” almost 2 miles into the ground just by using Satellites?

The data does not show where the surface is precisely only +-5cm, but in what direction it is moving and when.

When the model knows where and how the surface vibrates, it can detect inner structures.

Jay Anderson’s simple explanation: Unlike Ground Penetrating Radar, Biondi’s SAR technique uses X-band microwaves (10 GHz, 3 cm wavelength) that barely penetrate the ground (less than 30 cm). Instead, it detects subtle surface movements—shivers—caused by resonating voids deep underground or behind walls. These shivers, akin to seismic waves, create a Doppler effect that SAR measures with high resolution in distance, direction, and frequency shift. Biondi analyzes these patterns across pixel lines (tomograms) to pinpoint the voids’ locations, tracing the mechanical surface effects back to their subterranean sources."

So how does one “see” almost 2 miles into the ground just by using Satellites?

Italy’s COSMO-SkyMed constellation data is open source and free (https://earth.esa.int/eogateway/catalog/cosmo-skymed-full-archive-and-tasking) and this data can be downloaded and acted upon.

But how?

In short the Doppler Shift from a satellite that has mu By tracking minute Doppler shifts, micro-Doppler effects induced by vibrating targets, the algorithm inferred the presence of cavities or structures affecting the vibration modes.

This approach is akin to medical ultrasound or sonar in concept but uses radar waves and naturally occurring seismic “noise” as the source of illumination.

By combining multiple viewing angles and repeated passes, a full 3D underground imaging (tomography) with meter-scale resolution.

Now with AI analysis this technique can be used around the world. This is a project I have started motivated by the work of the researchers that released insights on their Giza Plateau discoveries.

Brian Continues: Giza Plateau Radar AI Project

Over the last 48 hours I am making progress on training a small AI model to help with the results from the radar satellites – including Italy’s COSMO-SkyMed constellation and data from Capella Space used to scan the Giza pyramids from orbit. These satellites operate in the X-band frequency (~9.6 GHz, with ~3 cm wavelength), which provides fine image detail. Typically, radar signals at such high frequency penetrate only a few meters into dry ground at best, meaning conventional SAR would only map surface features. The key innovation by Biondi and Malanga was to overcome this limitation by analyzing the micro-vibrations of the structures rather than relying on direct wave penetration. The Doppler Effect shift has collected robust and prestigious results. However the team has not fully deployed AI assisted interpretation for the scans. This model is hoped to offer a more rapid way to scan the data and produce higher resolution direct images. More soon.

NEW AI ENHANCEMENT OF EGYPT IMAGES!

It is very, very early days on this AI project to improve the Giza Plateau SkyMed images. But we have made robust progress. On the left we have the original Khahe Project image. On the right we have the same image enhanced by AI trained on medical and environmental images plus data from COSMO-SkyMed. We have found more structure and what we believe is a more accurate focus of the 1 meter resolution of SAR Doppler. The model has 100s of 1000s of training images to get better results.
